On August 16, 17 and 18, Blue Earth will welcome a host of carvers and quilters in the 36th Annual Woodcarvers and Quilt EXPO to be held in Unity Hall at Blue Earth Area High School. Hours of the EXPO are 4-8 pm on Friday, 10 am-5 pm on Saturday, and noon-4 pm on Sunday. Adult admission is only $5; children under 12 are admitted free. A three day pass is $8. An Opening Night reception is scheduled for Friday from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm with complimentary beverage and snacks for all attendees.
Friday night will have several other attractions in addition to the Opening Night reception. There will be a bed turning, organized by Linda Bakken, of beautiful scrap quilts at 5:00 and 7:00 pm. At 6:00 pm Julie Post will lead attendees in Fabric Shuffle, an enjoyable game. Attendees can bring 10-inch squares of fabric to play, or may purchase them in the Boutique.
The featured Quilter for this year’s EXPO is Lissia Laehn of Blue Earth, who is well known for her many large quilts and her wonderful use of color. Lissia has displayed quilts in the EXPO for many years, is the Heartland Embroidery in Blue Earth and the new Heartland Retreat Center, and is a member of Block Swappers. Special guest Tracy Trevethan – well-known Minnesotan wool work guru – will present a lecture and trunk show at 2:00 pm on Saturday. This trunk show is generously sponsored by Heartland Embroidery of Blue Earth, Calico Hutch Quilt Shop of Hayward, and Old Alley Quilt Shop of Sherburn, and is included in the ticket price. There will be a number of special displays – a series of local challenge quilts inspired by page 36 of random quilt magazines will be displayed, as well as a dozen quilts created by the Block Swappers. This year’s exchange was small house blocks. This will be the last year for woodcarvers at the show since the local carving group has dissolved.
Local quilters will be presenting ongoing demonstrations throughout the EXPO. The popular EXPO Walking Tours by Mike Ellingsen will return again – this will be Ellingsen’s last year of heading the EXPO. Hundreds of woodcarvings and quilts will be on display. Quilt supplies can be purchased from vendors, and quilters and non-quilters alike can purchase any number of lovely items from the Quilt Boutique. There will be People’s Choice winners for the displayed quilts. Quilts in the “Shades of Gray” challenge will also be displayed. The annual EXPO Challenge is sponsored by CCF Bank of Blue Earth.
